The moves on this page are super easy to get for anyone starting out with Hip Hop dancing. There are 3 videos below with each video teaching one specific Hip Hop move. There is a demonstration of the movement and a great breakdown by the teacher. You’ll be able to use these moves immediately.
Lesson #1: Chest Pop – This a quick move you can implement into your routine anywhere. Here you will contract your chest and then “pop” it out very fast to make it look as if it does it on its own.
Transcript of Chest Pop video:
Hi, I’m Keith Fitzpatrick, this is easy to learn hip-hop and we’re going to go over our chest pop. So this is a really easy step, or movement. You’re going to start with your chest and a lot of times you can just do it with your hand where you’re kind of bringing your hand, it’s making your chest kind of go out with it, but it’s going to be really quick, you just want to kind of hit, boom.
So it kind of starts here in your shoulders and you’re kind of pushing back to make your chest come forward. So, that’s something you can do either way, boom. And a lot of times, you’ll see that you’ll have your hand here and you’ll kind of bring your chest, but you want it to start and stop, you always with anything that has a pop, you want to have a start, and to have a stop.
So, it’ll start here, you’ll come to a stop and go back, boom, but it’s really quick, either way, boom. And you can actually kind of change your direction with that pop, if you want to pop and go that way, and then go that way, you can do that too, but you just want to make sure that each one comes to a stop, and not a long stop, you don’t want it to be a roll, because we’re going to go over that later, but it’s a pop, boom, boom.
And it’s the chest pop is something you can incorporate into a lot of other things, just like with the tutting that we we’re doing in the last one. If you’re tutting and you’re popping with your chest, boom, boom, that’s something you can incorporate into that. So just start flat, push your shoulders back, and push your chest out. Control to the side, just slide, and that’s your chest pop.
Lesson #2: “Punch down” hip hop move:
This one combines punching of the arms with a slide. Make sure to really “punch” down with your arms and flex your knees for better balance.
Transcript of Punch down move:
Hi, I’m Keith Fitzpatrick and this is hip-hop moves for men and we’re going to go with something I call the punch down. All right? So this one is just real cool kind of hard step at the same time and you have the opportunity to be smooth and hard at the same time.
So we’re going to start off with your step to your right, you’ll hit down, with your right hand and your left foot will come up, so you’re going to punch down here, boom. All right, so you’ll step here, you’ll do the same thing, punch down here, you’ll slide out and hit both down and that leg will come up, okay?
So again it’s going to go, one, two, slide out, three, hit both, boom. And I really want that last one to kind of come all the way down and shoot your leg as high as you can get it, okay? So, again it’s going to be one, two, three, down. All right, the other way. You’re going to hit here, here, slide out, drop. However you do it make sure that you get that transition I was talking about.
You want to get low, low, up, low. Okay, so the tempo is going to be here, here, boom, pah. All right, again, you’re here boom, boom, slide out, hit. You can do it the same way the other way after you hit there you can just come right, back, boom. All right, so the last time you’re here, one, two, three, here, boom, boom, slide, pah. All right, there’s your punch down.
Lesson #3: Body Rolls – This a quick move you can implement into your routine anywhere. Here you will contract your chest and then “pop” it out very fast to make it look as if it does it on its own.
Transcript of body rolls:
Hi I’m Keith Fitzpatrick this is easy to learn hip-hop and we’re going to go over a body roll. Now the thing with your body roll is you want to be able to start it at one position, maybe-, usually up here. And kind of roll it all the way down. Some people just roll and they’ll start here and kind of stop here. I usually like for it to go all the way through.
So, you’ll start at your head actually and kind of let it come all the way here, then it comes to your shoulders and your body rolls all the way down and then even to your legs it stops there. Okay, so I will have a piece, well choreographed and the roll will start here and you can either go straight back and stop or you can roll this way, put your body into it and then your feet go here too.
So either way, you’ll roll and stop. It’s always a start and a stop. If you go that way, your head is coming here — your body rolls and you stop. It is something that can be in transition, too. If you are sliding here, you roll and stop, either way, but you just want to make sure that you isolate each part so it doesn’t just look like you’re just flopping around.
You start with your head, roll, and each individual part has its position and a stop. So again, you’re starting — if you are rolling sideways you’ll go that way, bop. If you’re rolling this way you’ll go here, boom. If you are going straight back, you’ll just head back that way. Now if you are rolling with a sideways roll, then you’ll come here and you’ll start to the side and roll it all the way down. Other way, you roll it all the way down.
Either way, just make sure you are starting here and your body is going all the way through. All right, that’s your body roll.
