Hip Hop Beginner – Mini Series #2

Here are 3 more moves that you can learn online with the videos below. These free lessons will teach you each move individually – and the last lesson will teach you you how to combine all these beginner steps together. You will see how they are linked together and your teacher will count them out for you. At the very end he also shows the whole whole combo with music.

Lesson #1: “Slide Pop” hip hop move:
This one combines punching of the arms with a slide. Make sure to really “punch” down with your arms and flex your knees for better balance.

Transcript of “Slide Pop” video:

Hi I’m Keith Fitzpatrick. This is hip-hop moves for men, and we are going to go over a move called a slide pop. All right, so what we’re going to do – we’re going to start with our right arm or your left, whichever one, but for this purpose we’re going to start with our right. We’re going to slide this way, we’re going to slide this way, then we’re going to take a step with our right foot and bring both arms open and grab right at the end. Okay? Real easy step.

So, again, you are going to start here, you’ll flow, flowing – take a step with your right foot and bring both arms open and grab right there at the end, okay? Let’s try going the other way also. You are going to take your left hand, you’ll come this way, you’ll slide with this way, take a step with this leg, open both arms and grab right there at the end, okay?

So, let’s try it to tempo. It’ll be here, move, move, move, and grab, okay? Another time, to the left and go here, here, slide, grab and what you really want to do is at the end of that grab, sink down — let your arms sink your body down and grab right in front of you. So one more time, here, here, here, slide grab. Here, here, slide grab. There you go. That’s the slide pop.

Lesson #2: The dip & step

Transcript of The dip and step video:

Hi I’m Keith Fitzpatrick. This is hip-hop moves for men. We’re going to go over the dip and step. So, what you’re going to do — this is kind of a transitional move as well, but you can do it, you know, independent of another move. You want to just dip down here in front, boom. You’ll just drop down — here.

And again, a lot of our hip-hop stands, is a lot of moves we do, as I said earlier in the clip about your stands — is here — with knees bent, in this kind of sluggish, hunchback position. So, you’ll be here – boom. You’re just going to jump out of that — up, up jiggle and step, okay? So you drop down — you’ll dip down and step. You dip down again – boom — and step.

That’s really simple, but the main thing to do is that there has to be transition between you being up here, and into a dip. A lot of people just don’t think about the way things look as far as transitioning from up, to how you can dip. If you just do this — that’s not really dipping, you’re not moving.

So, you want to make sure that there’s a difference between here and here. Okay, so real simply you’ll drop down — here and here — drop here — and here. Just put it together – it’s going to go like that. All right? Real simple. That’s your dip and step.

Lesson #3: Kick cross step

Transcript of Kick cross step:

So let’s get started here. Alright, the first thing you want to do is kick. First step, boom. Don’t force, don’t place the kick or anything like that. It’s a real loose, bop. Just like that.

Now, what I want you to do is take that same kick with your right foot and kind of lean to your left as you’re doing it. So you’re going to go, kick, alright.

Notice, that if you’re actually leaning yourself as you kick and kind of throwing yourself off balance what happens is your right foot catches you. So the foot that you kick, catches you. Very natural. So that’s what I want you to remember; this movement is natural. You don’t have to place anything, alright.

So again you’re going to kick, cross, and then you step out. That’s where the step comes from; from the kick, cross, step. So it’s your kick and your cross, this is your cross, step.

Let’s try it again. 5-6-7- we go kick, cross, step. Alright. Now, there is a slight bounce or hop to it. More of a bounce then a hop but you’ll see what I mean. What you’re doing is… exactly. Just a nice little simple, boom. Using the balls of your feet and your toes to kind of lift you up. That’s what you’re doing when you kick.
Kick. So, 5-6-7- we go kick, 6-7- we go kick, 6-7- we go kick. Yay? Alright.

So, next thing you’re going to do is, remember that lean I told you? As we do out kick, with our little bounce, we’re going to lean to our left. So it’s kick, cross. Bow we’ve caught ourselves naturally, and then we’re, step.
So let’s try it. Here we go. And 5-6-7- you go kick, cross, step. Ready go. Kick, cross. Last time, here we go, and kick, bop. Alright? Cool.

Now let’s get into some arms. You’ve got the basics of the kick, cross, step to practice. What you’re going to do is you’re going to go kick, cross, step. So our arms are, boom, boom, boom. Ready we go cross, open, cross. Again we go cross, open, cross.

Now you want to have a groove to it, so let’s take our groove. Let’s go here like this, boom, boom. I’ll show you from the side, you just, boom, unh, that’s right, I’m rocking to the beat, okay. Good.
So it’s cross, out, cross, out, cross, out. So when we cross it’s like we’re backing up on it. Cross, out, cross, out, cross, out, and cross, out. Good.

Now, let’s add that with the kick. Alright so we have kick, cross, step. So 5-6-7-8 kick, cross, step. Ready go kick, cross, step.

So, your arms stay crossed on the cross. Stay crossed on the cross. 5-6-7-8 kick, cross, unh. Ready again, and kick. Good.

Alright, so now, once we’re here we’ve got to get back to the other side, so with the left leg, same principal. 5-6-7-8 kick, cross, unh. Yes, and 5-6-7-8 kick, cross, step. Alright? Got it? Cool.

So let’s do it slowly, a Capella. We’re going to do one to one side, one back to the other. You pause the video, repeat it a couple of times and by the time you’re ready to press play again we’ll be doing it will the music.

Here we go. A Capella we have kick and boom, and kick and boom. Let’s do it one more time sped up. 5-6-7-8 kick, boom, kick, boom.

Alright, this is your time to pause, go back over it and like I said, when you press play again we’ll be doing it to the music.

Alright, so, DJ Mahalo. There we go, on it.

Here we go, and 5-and 6- and 5-6-7-8 kick step, kick, cross, step, kick, cross, step, kick, cross, step, kick, cross, step, kick, cross, step, kick, cross, step, kick, cross, step. Alright.
Thank you DJ.

Alright, so, how’d you guys do? How do you feel? Hopefully you feel encouraged that you either got it, or you’re going to get it. Those are the only things you should be feeling right now.
