How to choose the right video for you.

Step 1.

Choose a style!

There are many reasons people learn to dance. Is there a social function in your future, such as a wedding or prom? Interested in having more fun on the dance floor at clubs? Perhaps exercise is your motivation.

There are over 20 styles of dance. Click here for a listing and brief description of the various dance styles

Step 2.

Choose a Dance.

In many styles there is more than one dance. For example, Ballroom includes as many as 5 basic dances, the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz. You may choose a tape that teaches the entire style or you may like to do it one dance at a time.

Step 3.

Choose a skill level.

Most video tapes come in three different skill levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Since there are so many styles of dance, it is hard to detail the different levels. However, a good scale would be the system used by Ballroom Schools. They have a Bronze, Silver and Gold level.

If you have no experience, start with a Beginner level tape. These tapes offer instruction for the most fundamental aspects. If you have some experience, you may be more suited for an Intermediate level tape. The Intermediate tapes will add more variation and style to the basic steps. In many cases they are a continuation of the beginner level tapes. The Advanced levels are for those dancers with more experience. They offer more complicated material and provide detail to style.
