Have a
game plan: Don't go into a practice or a lesson with
no ideas on what you want to achieve. If you are going
to practice for an hour break down your practice time
into segments. Spend 10 minutes on the timing of your
steps, 10 minutes on the footwork of your steps, 10
minutes on posture and shapes, 10 minutes on spotting on
the floor and finish off the remaining time by trying to
do all these aspects at the same time with music. Going
into a practice or lesson and just putting the music on
and dancing for an hour is not a very beneficial
practice. You will improve, but in a much slower pace
than if you had planned out your time.

Repetition: To truly learn something repetitions are
a must. Especially with dancing. If you are learning a
new Hip Hop routine or step and you have to do the steps
over and over till you are doing the same thing every
time. If you do it the first time and it comes out this
way and then the next time it comes out a different way
and so on then you will never know what to expect.
Repetition is the key to locking something away and be
able to remember it anytime you want.
The Anyone Can
Dance series on DVD makes learning to dance easy.
Teachers/Coaches: Teachers/Coaches are a must. I
always point out that even Michel Jordan has a coach.
Depending on your goals it is good to get the
perspective of an instructor. Teachers offer insight
that can make learning much easier. Most importantly
they offer a visual. We all can relate to what we see.
The best dancers in the world were trained. They did not
come into this world with that knowledge. This is where
the use of a video/DVD is really handy. Instructional
videos offer you the chance to have a lesson with a
teacher when ever you want and as many times as you
want. Visit our
Online Lessons to see
sample video clips. I have been teaching since 1983 and
I have never had a student come back and remember
everything we did on the last lesson.

Keep Notes:
As a teacher I keep notes on each lesson I have with
each student. This is the only way I can keep it all
straight in my head. So keep a notebook on your dancing.
List what you practiced on your last lesson or practice
session. Do this and you will not only see improvement
in your dancing, but you will have written proof of it
too.
Do these
things and you will improve at a much greater rate.
