Below are the written steps for the Waltz.

The Waltz is danced in a box that will rotate around the room. A good waltz will also have a slight rise and fall motion. Her are listed the steps for the basic box and the underarm turn.

Waltz Box Step

Men's Steps

(The couple is in closed dance position in front of the man)

1. Large step forward with the LF.
2. Step forward with the RF so that right heel is parallel to left toe 6 - 8 inches apart.
3. Bring the LF to the RF.
4. Large step back with the RF.
5. Step back with the LF so that the left toe is parallel to right heel 6 - 8 inches apart.
6. Bring the RF to the LF.

Abbreviations:
RF
Right Foot
LF Left Foot
Each number represents a beat of music

 

Box Step turning left

Men's Steps

(The woman is in closed dance position in front of the man)

1. Large step forward with the LF.

2. Step forward with the RF and make a 1/2 turn to the left.

3. Bring the LF to the RF.

4. Large step back toward the back right corner of the room with the RF.

5. Step back with the LF in back of the RF and make a 1/2 turn to the left.

6. Bring the RF to the LF.

Right Foot
LF Left Foot
Each number represents a beat of music

 

Waltz Underarm Turn

Men's Steps

(The woman is in closed dance position in front of the man)

1. Large step forward with the LF.
2. Step forward with the RF and make a 1/4 turn to the left.
3. Bring the LF to the RF.
4. Large step back with the RF.
5. Step back with the LF and make a 1/4 turn to the left.

(Man raises the left arm, the lady's right and push the lady under across the front of the man)

6. Bring the RF to the LF.

(The lady is on the left side of the man, both are facing the back of the room)

7. Large step forward with the LF. (Man continues to keep left arm up as the lady continues to turn)
8. Step forward with the RF and make a 1/4 turn to the left.
9. Bring the LF to the RF.

(Man lowers the left arm and places the right hand to the lady's back, the lady ends up in front of the man)

10. Large step back with the RF.
11. Step back with the LF and make a 1/4 turn to the left.
12. Bring the RF to the LF.
