The second season of ABC's
Dancing With The Stars was a great follow up to the first season. The stars
are brighter and the competition looks to be the toughest yet. This type of
dancing has been going on in America for some time now and is called Pro/Am
dancing. Pro/Am dancing brings an amateur and professional dancer together
and they compete as a team against other Pro/Am couples. In this case
the amateur dancers are more than the everyday people that paved the road to
brought us to Dancing With the Stars, they are public personalities from
many walks of life.
As a Professional Ballroom
Dancer since 1983 I have had the good fortune to share the floor with
several of the Professional dancers on the show and can tell you that
they are some of the most demanding and competitive teachers you will find,
which explains for the high quality of dancing from the Stars considering,
the short amount of time they have spent training for the show. Here is how
we at
www.learntodance.com see the competition
going after week 1.
By far the most
disappointing performance was from Master P. I know that he is only doing
this for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but he doesn't seem to care very
much about going far in the competition, or putting his best effort forward. This
may be the saving grace for Kenny Mayne who obviously worked very hard to
get ready for the first week. Kenny did his best in week 1, but Kenny is not
the most graceful person on the show.
The rest of the competition gets
a bit tougher.
Jerry Rice and
George Hamilton
did very well, but will have to step it up a bit to keep pace with
Drew Lachey who truly was the best of the men in week 1. The biggest competition
will be among the Lady Stars. Tia Carrere and
Giselle Fernandez turned in
very good performances, but they didn't quite capture the audience like
Stacy Keibler,
Lisa Rinna and
Tatum O' Neal. I thought that O'Neil and
Fernandez did a better job of keeping the basic ideas that are associated
with the Waltz, they just need to iron out some of the wrinkles that trouble
all that try to dance at this level. Stacy and Lisa were a great deal more
into showing off how they could go from pose to pose and how flexible they
were, which is much easier than dancing in the proper dance hold. A lot of
flash, but not a lot of the traditional waltz basics.
